~ 2013-2014 UMass RSO Outstanding Event of the Year ~
The 2013 Mark H. McCormack Department of Sport Management Career Fair, held on Thursday, November 7, was a smashing success for the Association of Diversity in Sport. The fourth annual event drew nearly 300 of UMass’ Sport Management Students and 30 organizations from the sport industry.
The five-hour event kicked off at noon with a riveting presentation from Bernie Mullin, President and CEO of The Aspire Group, an internationally renowned sport and entertainment marketing agency based out of Atlanta, GA. A former professor of Sport Management at UMass, Mullin is heralded as the “ticketing guru” and literally wrote the book on sports marketing. His presentation, entitled, “You Gotta Have WHOPPPP”, highlighted the important characteristics that aspiring sport industry professionals must have to succeed in the business.
The third annual McCormack Sport Panel Series, which runs along side the career fair, featured other speakers as well. Bryan Burns, who spent the majority of his career (17 years at ESPN and 16 years in MLB) working on television rights and contracts in sports, spoke to students about his experiences and told the inspiring story about how making it in the industry is possible with determination, hard work, and a bit of luck.
Mike Tannenbaum, a UMass Sport Management alumnus who most well known for his time spent as the General Manager of the NY Jets (2006-2011), spoke to a room filled by students and faculty to standing roo only capacity. Tannenbaum’s presentation involved advice on how to become an affective leader within the sport industry and also touched on his experiences at UMass.
For the third straight year, Comcast-Spectacor was the lead sponsor of the career fair and panel series. The company, which operates in 46 states and countries all over the world, has strong ties to UMass as high up as its President and COO, Peter Luukko, who is a UMass Sport Management alumnus. Comcast-Spectacor was represented in the fair by some of its subsidiary companies, including Front Row Marketing, Philadelphia Flyers, and Global Spectrum.
Comcast-Spectacor also sponsored the inaugural Comcast-Spectacor Case Study Competition. Based on a facility management case study, four teams of McCormack Sport Management students wrote papers and presented their ideas to a team of Comcast-Spectacor employees and McCormack professors.
The Association of Diversity in Sport put lots of time and effort into the planning of this event. All in all, over 10 department heads and 30 volunteers took part in the planning of the club’s largest annual event.
